Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente | Márgenes 2022

Digital Campaing

 

For the Márgenes 2022 edition, a campaign was proposed whose main idea focused attention on the different attempts of humanity to expand our sensory capacities. One of the main keys of the campaign was to give a point of humor to this premise. To do this, the campaign focused on the inventions of the inventor Kenji Kawakami who, from his Chindogu Institute in Japan, made a series of absurdly original inventions for this purpose. Four posters were generated through images that were donated through the collaboration of the Chindogu institute with the festival. Each one of them corresponds to one of the senses that cinema directly appeals to, the auditory and the visual, relating the campaign directly to the idea of Audiovision of French film theorist Michelle Chion.

 

The images taken during the 70s, 80s and 90s represent a historical journey that emphasizes the need for humans to broaden their senses throughout history with more or less luck. After all, it is undeniable that Cinema as an invention is still one of them. The achievement in this process is confirmed by its origins as a laboratory experiment in the first works of the Lumièr brothers in France at the beginning of the 20th century and which later became an inexhaustible and lucreative means of communication to tell some of the greatest stories and legends that make up the global popular imagination today.

Brand Identity, Make-up Web & Campaing 2021

 

The Madrid International Independent Film Festival, Márgenes, commissioned us in 2021 to renew its corporate image and the campaign for that year’s edition. The festival was undergoing a series of changes after more than 10 years of experience in which it stood out for being the first online film festival in the Ibero-American sphere. Within this series of changes, the festival wanted to focus on two aspects: Attracting a younger audience without losing its status as a serious and consolidated festival and, at the same time, standing out as a city festival in which the City of Madrid should become the protagonist.

 

With this aspects in mind we first decided to change the typographic image of the Festival and it was decide to choose the GT Zirkon, a contemporary typeface family created by Tobias Rechsteiner. This font is characterized by collecting the influences of the Gothic typefaces of the 19th and 20th century but propping them up in the 21st century through the distribution of their weights, details and extreme flexibility through its different applications. The result is a typeface with an institutional character but with a lot of play in its finishes and details that give it a relaxed and close character at the same time.
The M that makes up the main logo of Márgenes has been slightly modified and adapted as imagotype. This choice is not accidental since the M is the first letter of Márgenes and also the first letter of Madrid. The use of the M as the main element of the festival’s identity thus responds to the two needs mentioned above, strengthening the iconicity of the festival on the one hand and bringing it closer to Madrid institutionally.

 

For the 2021 campaign, a visual game was proposed that aims to responded to the following hypothesis. What happens when you blur the optical center of an image? The answer is self-evident: the margins begin to gain prominence. Showing scenes, characters and elements that even though they seem secondary a priori, their importance within the context of the action is resignified when we focus our attention on them. For this, four photos provided by their authors were used, in four different contexts to also emphasize the different themes that are addressed within the festival and bring the point of interest as close to as many people as possible. Thus, one from the musical field was used, the burial of Camarón. One from the sports field, the victory of Perico Delgado an iconic Spanish cyclist in the 1988 Tour de France.  One related to a cultural environment with marginal connotations but mainstream at the same time, a photo of Paco Poyato in the Barcelona Erotic Show, and another from the everyday sphere, a gypsy wedding in the south of Spain.

By blurring the optical center of each of the images, the margins came to light, telling us new stories that we would never have noticed before due to the predominant weight exerted by the optical center on them. In this way, the hypothesis remained: The great stories also happen in the Margins.

Prinzedom Records is a small label based in Barcelona and managed collectively by former members of bands linked to the Galician DIY scene with a wide musical background. With a pure amateurist vision of music and entrenched in their Family Cult self tagged label, Prinzedom records has released more than 20 first references by unknown artists and brand new projects by established artists to this date.

 

To develop the identity of the label, we wanted to start from a punk-minimalist aesthetic that reflected the way of working and the philosophy of the label. The seal logo is taken from the international symbol of the queen in chess, a hobby shared by more than one of the members, and that is referring to royalty, to the prince, a secondary figure within the royal lineage but even so, if possible, more relevant and powerful.

 

The typeface used is Swiss 721, a robust and elegant typeface that can withstand absolutely anything. Through it we make a stamp that decorates all the references that the label publishes and that leaves two holes, one for the artist’s signature, making the signature in handwriting an act of faith by the artist and another hole for the bar code that contains the key to the reference number.

 

The cover system plays exclusively with three elements. The passport photo representing an artist whose identity is yet to be constructed, the crown representing his membership in the royal family of Prinzedom, and the artist’s handwriting signature representing his commitment to the label.

For the singles system, it is simply played with the signature and the release date.

 

For the different programs that the label hosts on international community radio, Dublab, we play with the iconicity of images that allude to the content of each program and the background colors, allowing flexibility and given information to the listener to communicate in a simple way what kind of monsters will clash during the listening.

Helsinkipro – Music Agency & Record Label

Brand Identity

 

Helsinkipro is currently one of the most important agencies in the music industry in Spain. The company founded in 2014 and focused at that time on the electronics and EDM circuits of the moment began as a booking and management company with DJs such as DJs from Mars, Vitalic, Vallès…etc.

 

Soon their musical restlessness and predilection for the Spanish indie scenes and the new urban music led them to take a more alternative direction and to work on new niches and genres, abandoning the first stage. It is during this period that artists such as Mueveloreina, Cecilio G, Pedro LaDroga, Cariño, Luna Ki, Pantocrator, VVV[trippin’you], the multi-platinum $kyhook, the Grammy-nominated producer Inner Cut, Slecta, joined the agency. .etc. In this way, the agency consolidates itself as one of the most eclectic and solvent companies on the scene, achieving in a few years the respect and recognition of a large part of the industry and positioning itself as one of the key players within the Spanish music scene.

 

The agency is growing in artists and functions as well as equipment and covering more and more aspects within the production chain of the sector. Distribution, digital marketing, communication strategies and RRSS, press, editorial management, record label, management, event producer, booking agency… The endless aspects covered made it difficult when facing the new identity that we had to work out.

 

After various sessions with the founders trying to understand and bring together all the fronts that Helsinkipro covered, we reached a key conclusion to proceed to establish the starting point for the new image of the label. Helsinkipro is a guide. A guide in the music industry, where if you don’t have the right one it can turn out into a real hell. His expertise in all the different phases that an artist needs to show out his work and reach the audience Helsinkipro was a real expert in knowing and working in all the steps and touching all the buttons needed to make an artist grow, not only in numbers, but also artistically ampliflying their voice and reaching new audiences.

That is why we came up with the idea of using the polar star, the one that has guided navigators from all over the world to their destination for centuries, as the main logotype for the agency’s new image. A star that guides future and present pop stars. To consolidate its image as a digital and modern agency, a typeface with great weight was chosen: Univers 85 Extra Black for the headers and the main logo, and Univers 55 Roman for all communications and corporate texts, consolidating an image of renewal and modernity as well as seriousness.

The logo is designed to be seen and stand out in the various applications that a company like this requires, from record credits, video clips, posters, newsletters…etc. The weight of the H and the K together with the star immediately generate an image in accordance with the values and weight that the company currently carries out in the Spanish music industry and perfectly condense its values and functions within it.

Roland Jazz Chorus-40

Customization

 

Amplifier customization for the band Uniforms belonging to the rooster of jagermusic Spain. The goal was to brand the amp with the liquor brand’s colors, logos, and motifs and try to recreate the classic elegance of 70’s amps that matched the band’s psychedelic sound and aesthetic.

 

To do this we used a bottle green grillcloth spun with cream colored cane. We dyed the leather with dye and decorated the knobs with epoxy resin tinted in the characteristic orange color of the band.

 

The jewels that adorn the screen have been made of polished brass by jeweler Berta Arranz and stenciled with green lacquer.

Amplifier customization for the band Uniforms belonging to the rooster of jagermusic Spain. The goal was to brand the amp with the liquor brand’s colors, logos, and motifs and try to recreate the classic elegance of 70’s amps that matched the band’s psychedelic sound and aesthetic.

Los Bailes Perdidos describes an ordinary night before the pandemic, from different parts of the world in tribute to all those nights not lived through the Pandemic. A tribute to one of the most important things that was lost during 2020-2021 with the closure of all clubs and concert halls: The Music and the feeling of belonging to a community.

Los Bailes Perdidos is based on the idea of ​​capturing the physical format of the Escama remixes album, an album that could not be presented during 2020. We decided to generate a unique piece that collected the experiences of different people that orbit along the band’s scene that were affected for this phenomenon.

A 336-page book with photos, texts, poems and anecdotes from more than 57 collaborators who participated in a completely altruistic way. Contributors include fans, journalists, artists, programmers, club and concert hall owners, photographers, and writers.

Includes digital download of Escama Remixes, as well as statements from the artists involved in the making of the songs in red pages.

B•SUAL is a digital exhibition in video game format that presents 15 different visual underworlds linked to artworks, visual imaginary and merchandising of the Spanish underground  music scene.

The commission by the FSTVL•B was based on the curatorship of a digital exhibition held in the midst of the pandemic during winter of 2021. To carry it out, we decided to team up with the Master Demiurge of the digital world Carles Castanyo. Together we have developed and gave life to this video game/exhibition that captures 15 different magic underworlds where you can travel through and interact with the work of some of the most relevant creatives of the Spanish music scene which will explain their creative processes, their concerns and some of their works through explanatory videos and digitized pieces.

Synthesized Epic Fantasy Party

Starring some of the most powerful warlocks of all time

 

We are thrill to announce that we have been invited by Human Razzmatazz to host a party within their September lineup. The party will be a gathering of different wizards and creatives to celebrate epic fantasy, magic and the craziest and most brutal sounds.

 

The poster designed by us and illustrated by Barcelona cartoonist, David Rosel, is a tribute to Ralph Bakshi 1977 movie, Wizards, and awesomely fun animated movie about fantasy, peace and magic.

 

Line Up

 

OMEL, The mysterious elven orchestra conducted by the hermit sorcerer @pau.oksana.

We are thrill to announce that we have been invited by Human Razzmatazz to host a party within their September lineup. The party will be a gathering of different wizards and creatives to celebrate epic fantasy, magic and the craziest and most brutal sounds.

 

The poster designed by us and illustrated by Barcelona cartoonist, David Rosel, is a tribute to Ralph Bakshi 1977 movie, Wizards, and awesomely fun animated movie about fantasy, peace and magic.

Fantasya: The Gathering, is a collectible card game that expands the universe of the LP “Fantasya”  created by the Sevillian artist Pedro LaDroga.

The idea came from a series of collectible posters for Pedro LaDroga’s 2020 tour that was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recovering the idea of ​​making a card game based on one of the best-known games in the industry, we decided to capture the physical format of his acclaimed LP, Fantasya, in a card deck that gathers all the tracks and different creatures that the multifaceted artist has embodied throughout his career. In this way we managed to expand the imagery of the album and of the artist himself through a communication campaign that achieved the surprising sales record of the entire edition in just three hours.

 

The Deck consists of a total of 41 Cards, each one a  unique collector’s item itself with 41 different artworks from various artists, photographers, illustrators and designers. Inside you will find:

For the Helsinkipro website, we needed to create a platform that would bring together all the facets that the agency covers within the music industry and that would be useful for its workers as a daily work tool.

 

To do this, we start from a home distributed in a modular way that serves to show the latest news from each of the sections that make up the web. In this way, the first thing the user encounters is a brief letter of introduction about what Helsinkipro is and what it is doing at all times.

 

The different sections that make up the rest of the web are worked on the same system of grids that expand the information when we click on each one of them. In this way it is possible to find from its entire music and video catalogue, artist press kits, buy items from the shop and discover the latest news, projects and partners where the brand collaborates without having to leave the web at any time.

 

The web’s color system is designed so that each color corresponds to a specific artist. Turboviolencia is the fourth studio LP by the band VVV [trippin’you]. A mature album that has been critically acclaimed and included in several lists of the best spanish albums of 2021. Tuboviolencia collects Escama’s legacy with nihilistic lyrics and dark generational hooligan anthems that explore new electronic sounds close to breakcore, gabber or drum n bass.

For the art direction, we decided to capture the agonizing and pessimistic theory of the album through the suffering of laboratory animals, in this case, a rabbit. The laboratory animal thus becomes a perfect metaphor for the lack of expectations and the social and media pressure that suffers the youth today. A No-Future anchored in the present and drowned out by tons of terabytes of information, selfies, private messages and kitten videos. For the two singles, the laboratory imaginary was extended through the use of the cage for “Monstruo” and the Panther’s Milk for “Odiar frontal” . An anthem that claims hatred and violence as an instrument of liberation against the system.

In it we learned about the history and sociology of wargaming, several modeling and painting techniques, as well as trying to expose some of the main problems that the hobby faces today: An excess of representative toxic masculinity, little diversity in the players, the use of iconography by the alt-right and we discuss how to try to deal with them.

 

It was a really fun and exciting afternoon and we all walked away with a freshly painted and battle ready model. Looking forward to repeat this experience!

In the depths of the darkest dungeon we found a bunch of ancient rock legends and craftmaster producers who have gifted us with nothing more and nothing less than 16 reworked pieces from the already iconic album of the band VVV [Trippin’you] that turns one year old.

 

The album was released with two advance singles, crown jewels of a masterpiece: TAB es Leal by Triángulo de Amor Bizarro and Odiar Frontal by Woesum.

 

“TAB es Leal” is the first remix of the future remixes album by the Neo-Bakala band from Madrid VVV [Trippin’you]. A re-work that approximates the already classic, “Nadie es Leal”, to a sonic landscape that mixes acid house with the sounds of a fucking sawmill. 

A 140BPM screw track  that perfectly captures the spirit of the original song and takes it to its own sharp-pointed and dangerous realm. Not for nothing, Triangulo de Amor Bizarro are loyal.

Produced by Xulián Sambade and recorded and mixed by Eduard Bujalance from Aliment, Rock Ciudad is a work that captivates at first listen. A honest statement in the hyper-pop and ultra-processed era. Its dark textures and oscillating movements provide the perfect mortar where the light emanating from the vocalist, Raul Páez (A.M.Q.N Records) can shine with its own light. urbe se atenúa. El molesto ruido se transforma poco a poco en una agradable melodía cargada
de matices. Distingues el timbre de lo que parece una guitarra de punzantes agudos y ritmo

Co-published with Humo Internacional, Rock Ciudad is the first EP released on vinyl by Los Yolos.

 

A no-holds-barred Rock album, recorded live in a studio in the heart of the city of Barcelona. Produced by Xulián Sambade and recorded and mixed by Eduard Bujalance from Aliment, Rock Ciudad is a work that captivates at first listen. A honest statement in the hyper-pop and ultra-processed era. Its dark textures and oscillating movements provide the perfect mortar where the light emanating from the vocalist, Raul Páez (A.M.Q.N Records) can shine with its own light. Undeniable hits that embed themselves in your ears and itch like a scab that you like to tear off. Ear wormed guitar lines and subtle non stoping rhythms that push forward to smash your pre-concepts of what Rock n Roll have become and should never be.

The first album by Nueve Desconocidos revolves around concepts such as guilt, punishment, redemption, obsession and death. To develop the cover aesthetically and conceptually, we decided to elaborate a story about the character who sings the songs and we found in him an obsessive and neurotic personality around these extremely Catholic concepts.

 

In this way, we tried to recreate and build the character’s own mental paranoia through iconic elements in the aesthetics and references of the artist himself. The album thus plays with three key elements: The cover, a series of nine crosses arranged on a wall in the style of David Fincher’s iconic Seven scene, the ninth sigil of the Ars Goetia, which represents Paimon, one of the lords of the Hell associated with knowledge and wisdom and the vinyl insert that is laid out in the same way that the sacred texts of the Bible are traditionally laid out.

 

Thus, we draw a connection between the different elements that make up the artwork around recognizable aesthetic elements in the popular religious imaginary and around the number nine, linking our story directly with the legend of the Nine Unknowns, a popular Indian tale, attributing to Paimon the task that they traditionally perform this council of wise man in the story of Ashoka.

Series of narrative posters for the iconic concert by VVV[trippin’you] and Depresion Sonora at Spook, one of the most infamous nightclubs on the Ruta del Bakalao. It was the first concert of Depression Sonora and VVV after the pandemic. The idea was to capture the new post-punk imaginary through elements that refer to being locked up at home. For this, the legendary Castlevania: Return To Castle was taken as a reference and some of the screens were used to generate the poster.

A film about dysfunctional masculinities, scrapyards, speed, demolition and an aftertaste of self-destruction that seeps through the smell of burning rubber. For the elaboration of this poster we sought to generate the sensation of something soulless, coarse, ugly, crude and imminently masculine. To do this, we look for various references of scrapyard business cards until we find the perfect design. The telephone number that appears on the poster is Alberto’s personal phone number. If you need anything, call him.

“A high-powered car heads down a highway and a bunker refuses to fade into oblivion. Echoes of the past reach Cosme’s residual world from the future.”
